Crane beach is located on the southeast coast of Barbados. It is one of the most popular beaches along this coast and is used extensively by both locals and tourists.
Public access to the beach is via a narrow roadway down to a rockfill headland located between the Crane Beach North and Crane Beach South beaches (see Aerials of Project Site under Related Information). The headland, which was constructed by private interests in the early 1970s, divides the two beaches and makes access between them difficult. Prior to construction of the headland, the north and south beaches were joined as one continuous beach.
This project is ranked second in priority in the Coastal Infrastructure Programme and has been assigned a construction budget of US $2 million.
- To provide continuous public access between the north and south beaches, and
- To provide improved public access to the beaches.
- Removal of the existing rockfill headland
- Construction of a new revetment and public promenade in front of the cliff and existing revetment between the north and south beaches
- Construction of a submerged reef just offshore of the revetment/ promenade
- Beach nourishment between the promenade and reef (7000 cubic meters of sand)
- Development of a new public parking area along the access road that runs behind the cliff top behind the south beach; and
- Improvement of public access from the new parking area down the existing access road to the promenade
