TENT BAY BOAT ACCESS IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Tent Bay in St. Joseph is considered to be an important fish-landing site on the east coast of Barbados. It is used by a limited number of fishers on a seasonal basis. Currently, however, the boat access facilities are very limited and require that boats be winched up the shore using a tractor-mounted winch. This makes hauling boats up the shore difficult, the difficulty being compounded by the uneven shore.

The bay is shared by the Atlantis Hotel, a popular tourist destination, and several private residences.

Tent Bay was given a priority ranking of 4 within the Coastal Infrastructure Programme and a construction budget of US $500, 000.

Project Objectives
The project objectives are as follows:

  • Provide improved facilities for landing, removing and launching of fishing boats, and improved access for boats between the water, and an area for storing and/ or repairing boats.
  • Provide improved access to the fish market area.
  • Provide general clean-up of the area.

Project Design Components
Based on the results of the analyses undertaken and workshops held to date, the focus of final design efforts were on re-constructing the boat launch facility.  This decision was based on a variety of factors, including the limited use of the facility, exposure to large wave conditions on a frequent basis, and construction logistics.

The Construction Phase
The contract for the construction of the project has not been awarded to a contractor as yet.
