SOCIAL IMPACT
A social assessment was conducted subsequent to completion of this project. It differed from the social impact assessment conducted prior to implementation of the project by considering what actually occurred. The social assessment of beach use at Welches beach shows that it is a popular beach, with increased usage since the CZMU beach improvement works.
Beach activities have not been negatively impacted by the project, with half of the weekly users indicating that their activities have remained the same. Local beach users, tourists, residents and businesses are complimentary about its aesthetics, in terms of the landscaping and smooth white sand, and the fact that the sidewalks and bus shelter have improved the area making it more inviting. They also appreciate the fact that it is a window to the sea. Features of the improvement works that have led to increased enjoyment include the fact that there is better swimming with sand underfoot in the sea as opposed to rock, and the beach is now wide and spacious. Persons are inclined to stay at the beach longer as they can now walk further, exercise more and play games such as football and volleyball. Residents in the area also recognise the positive impact of the coastal works, with one remarking that “it has stopped the sea from hitting the house”.
