The Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) was set up in 1983. It was conceived as a specialized governmental unit and has evolved from specifically dealing with issues relating to coastal erosion and the application of management strategies for dealing with this threat, to now incorporate marine research and coastal planning.
