REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND ORGANISATIONS

Barbados contributes to, and benefits from, participation in the activities of a number of international organizations, programmes and projects which are of direct relevance to island coastal management. Through this involvement, Barbados is able to access and to share valuable scientific, administrative and legal information.

In addition to its role in conventions and protocols and in ongoing activities of the Mainstreaming Adaptation to Climate Change project, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the Plan of Action of the Small Island Developing States, Barbados maintains an active role in several organizations and activities. These include,

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (IOCARIBE). This UNESCO supported secretariat bases in Cartegena , Colombia supports oceanographic data collection, training, information exchange and regional approaches to ocean and coastal management across oceanographic, fisheries, pollution, living and non-living resources issues.

CARICOM Fisheries Resource Assessment and Management Programme (CFRAMP). This eight year co-operative programme between Canada and CARICOM seeks to enhance the data collection and management capacity for Caribbean fisheries.

Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Natural Resource Management Unit. Through a Memorandum of Agreement, Barbados provides technical support to this organisation's Coastal Resources Management Initiative.

United Nations Environment Programme, Caribbean Environmental Programme. Barbados participates in this intergovernmental organization, based in Jamaica , through membership in the governing body, and on project related to environmental management in coastal areas.
