SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

Summer Internship Programme

In partial fulfillment of our commitment to encourage the professional development of our youth, the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) offers several students the opportunity to participate in our annual Internship Programme which runs from June to August. This programme offers a small group of students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to the daily operations of the CZMU. It is designed to complement on-going studies and interests with practical experience in methods of scientific research and to offer an introduction to several marine science related careers. As space is very limited, entry to the programme is on a competitive basis. The programme is open to secondary school students, (A-level) and post-secondary students and tertiary level students.

During the programme the interns are introduced to the work of the CZMU relating to the management of coastal resources in Barbados through attachment to the three main technical sections of the office: coastal engineering ; coastal resource management ; and marine biology research . Interns will also visit governmental and non-governmental agencies with which the CZMU has institutional linkages, and whose functions and operations are required to effectively manage our coastal resources.

A major output component of the Internship Programme is also the production of a research project by each intern. This is intended to provide the interns with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in scientific research procedures from project design to analysis and presentation of results. At the end of the internship programme, interns will present their project to the staff, their peers and other invited guests.

As space is limited, entry to the internship programme is on a competitive basis. Intern space is allotted for secondary school students, (A-level) and post secondary students and tertiary level students. Application forms for the programme should be completed and returned by e-mail or post to the CZMU by April 30th of each year. Submission of application forms with an attached curriculum vitae would be an asset.

 Glossary of Terms
El Ni￱o

Warm equatorial water which flows southward along the coast of Peru and Ecuador during February and March of certain years. It is caused by poleward motions of air and unusual water temperature patterns in the Pacific Ocean , which cause coastal downwelling, leading to the reversal in the normal north-flowing cold coastal currents. During many El Niño years, storms, rainfall, and other meteorological phenomena in the Western Hemisphere are measurably different than during non- El Niño years.

A warm current that usually appears around Christmas off the coast of Ecuador and Peru . It is often used to refer to episodic (3-5 year) events when the current is particularly intense and dominates the local population of organisms (the abundance of fish in particular). Such events lead to wider regional or global ocean-atmospheric perturbations whose manifestations range from increased sea surface temperatures in the tropical East Pacific to aberrant rainfall patterns. (see also ENSO ).
